Neglected diseases
In developing and emerging countries, it is the poorest of the poor who are worst affected by diseases. Contaminated drinking water and a lack of sewerage systems accelerate the spread of tropical and infectious diseases.There is an urgent need for action, especially against what are known as neglected tropical diseases. These affect about a billion people worldwide. The World Health Organization's special Tropical Diseases Research (TDR) program aims to coordinate and promote global efforts to combat tropical diseases.
